Rewarding Positive Behaviour in our communities

Last summer communities all over the UK were transfixed to their TV screens in disbelief at the riots.  South Wales was an area which was generally unscathed by these riots however it illuminated deep rooted community issues to the whole UK population.

It is easy to focus on the bad which takes place in our communities, bad behaviour, ASB, police incidents all are far more prevalent in peoples minds than the good.  This is why United Welsh, the South Wales based housing association, felt the need to create Positive Behaviour Rewards – the chance to recognise, acknowledge, reward and promote the positive behaviour in its neighbourhoods.

Positive Behaviour is a daily occurrence throughout all our communities it just is not always acknowledged.  The Positive Behaviour Rewards have been segmented into four categories; Bright Ideas for resolving anti-social behaviour, Helping Hands for rewarding young members of the community who make a difference or have done something positive for a United Welsh tenant,  Green Fingers for members of the community who have made a real effort to improve their garden or set up a community garden, and the Good Neighbour reward for those who go the extra mile, organise community events, or looking after elderly residents.

The rewards range from Flowers to vouchers and all who take the time to nominate and all who are nominated will receive Time Banking credits.  The first winners were rewarded at United Welsh’s tenant fun day in front of an audience of nearly five hundred people.

Sian Weeks, from United Welsh said; “The effects of this reward scheme are already noticeable within our communities with 20 nominated in the first wave of awards.  We take a whole community approach; United Welsh is not simply a provider of housing, and to this end we recognise the importance of acknowledging the amazing work which is already going on and look forward to seeing this replicated this across all our communities.”
