Councillors visit new older person’s bungalows in Rhymney

The Leader and Deputy Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, and local ward members were taken on a tour of the new Living+ bungalows delivered by United Welsh.

The new bunglaows provide housing for people 55years of age and over. Living+ is a service that specialises in meeting the lifestyle needs of this group of customers and is committed to developing services as people’s needs change.  A total of eleven modern bungalows were built in the close in Rhymney on a site United Welsh acquired through the Council’s land release for affordable housing provision.

Completed in the summer 2012 all eleven 2-bed bungalows were filled very quickly.  One resident likened living there to “winning the lottery”.  The development of the quiet cul-de-sac was greatly supported by Caerphilly Council and Welsh Government.

On their tour the Leader of the Council Harry Andrews and Deputy Gerald Jones, who is also the Cabinet Member for Housing, met Mrs and Mrs Meredith who live in the Close;  They spoke very highly of their new home and how happy they are in it – they had even baked Welsh cakes for the occasion.

Speaking of the visit Gerald Jones Deputy Leader of the council, and Cabinet Member for Housing said;

“The former St David’s Sheltered housing scheme was decommissioned back in 2008, so it’s great to see the site has now been transformed into this modern, fit for purpose development. We identified a strategic housing need for older people’s bungalows, so the council approved the disposal of the site to United Welsh. This scheme helps showcase the excellent partnership work that has been achieved to deliver affordable housing on public sector land which will benefit the local community.”

Anthony Whittaker Chief Executive of United Welsh added; “These bungalows are a testament to what can be achieved when we work together; United Welsh, Caerphilly County Borough Council and Greenhill Construction with the support of Welsh Government have delivered an outstanding life-changing development.  The community here cherish their new homes and neighbourhood. “
